The Iron Dome missile defense system used by Israel has faced issues with its high cost per interceptor missile. In response, Israel is developing a new defense system based on lasers, called the Iron Beam Laser Anti-Missile System. The Iron Beam is a cost-effective and powerful system that can track and destroy incoming missiles, drones, and rockets without relying on expensive interceptors.
The system works by firing lasers at targeted parts of the projectile to disable them, and has a range of between 7 to 10 kilometers with the ability to focus the beam to the diameter of a coin. While the Iron Beam may cause some damage, it is intended to augment existing missile defense systems rather than replace them. Additionally, the development of the Iron Beam marks a significant milestone in the use of laser warfare.
